Politics.co.uk carries an article today (Feb. 7, 2005) entitled Straw goes on the offensive over EU Constitution 'myths'
Acording to that article, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw "has launched a series of 'factsheets' designed to push the case for Britain's acceptance of the EU Constitution."
They quote Straw as saying that:
"'We will firmly be taking on the mythology of the eurosceptics which distort so much of the European Union. So we are posting a myth a day on the FCO website this week.
'All the many myths add up to one great myth that the European Union weakens our power and influence. The truth is that by playing a strong role in the EU we strengthen our British sovereignty.
'Today, power is about building alliances between nations that make us stronger together than we can be alone, and about maximising our influence in those alliances. A strong European Union makes Britain more prosperous and secure than we can be alone. It strengthens our sovereignty to have a firm grip on the levers of power in the EU. It would weaken us to isolate ourselves in an organisation so vital to our national interest.
'Sovereignty in isolation is a delusion. A castaway on a desert island is sovereign but powerless, without the assistance of others beyond.' "
FCO is the acronym for Foreign & Commonwealth Office News, where we find the February 6, 2005 article "JACK STRAW TACKLES MYTHS ABOUT THE EUROPEAN CONSTITUTIONAL TREATY".
We will be reviewing each of these daily "myth" postings daily.
