FCO Fact Sheet #2
deals with Myth No. 2:
Myth #2: The Constitutional Treaty will create a European Army
The EU is a long way from having its own army and is still greatly dependent upon NATO for its security, although we at EU Pundit think that the development of a European Army is inevitable - and desirable - if Europe is not to remain under the political domination of the United States forever and be able to defend itself in the future against foreign aggression.
In any case, the FCO points out that European defence (defense) cooperation is already present, citing to peacekeeping missions in the Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in the Democratic Republic of Congo and in Bosnia.
With a world population bursting at the seams and primitive religious fundamentalism on the rise, Europe will have to arm itself for its defense down the road sometime soon, or it runs the risk of being overrun by armed foreign peoples. It is a danger not recognized by liberal dreamers, but well understood by sober students of history.
Note in past days that the EU has tried to convince Iran to abandon its nuclear program (see here and here), without success. Iran has stated that it plans to be "a big player" on the nuclear scene. Ponder a world in which the USA tells Europe it is on its own and where Europe then has to face a nuclear-armed Muslim world without any offensive or defensive military systems of its own. Europe would be lost. Obviously, the Muslims are pleased at driving a wedge between America and the nations of Europe and there are enough fools in Europe to play along.
To understand the danger presented by the Muslim nations to Europe and the world, one merely has to recall the Greek win over the Persians at Marathon (490 BC) millennia ago, which saved Greece (and probably Europe) from Persian domination, and to examine the historical legacy of the peoples of this region such as the Assyrians, whose rule has always been marked by reigns of terror, cruelty and injustice. Nothing has changed in 3000 years. The wars are new, but the battle of civilization against the forces of darkness is an old one. Europe has to wake up to the realities.
The EU Constitution does not mean that Europe will have its own army, but it should.
